Lake Fae Chapter 21: Finale

Screenshot-7844

My entire body ached. Every single part of it felt like it was on fire.

I couldn’t remember what happened at first. But after a few agonizing minutes, I remembered. The future. The drugs. The explosive. That’s why I hurt so bad.

Where was I? I tried to open my eyes but they wouldn’t budge. Was I dead? No, I could feel my body, I was pretty sure I was alive.

The more I woke up, the more aware of my surroundings I became. I heard soft chatter around me and a small, annoying beep every few seconds.

Screenshot-7846

Finally, I woke up enough to move. I pulled myself into an awkward sitting position, I had to pull my left leg up because for some reason it wasn’t moving. Must be the pain meds, they probably haven’t worn off yet.

“What’s going on?” I asked, as I looked around the hospital room.

Screenshot-7849

Everyone was here. Why? I was just knocked out, right?

“Oh Lake, baby, you’re awake.” Ginger leaned forward and pressed the nurse button on my bed.

“What’s going on?” I asked again.

“Do you remember what happened?” She asked softly.

“Yea kinda, am I ok?”

“Lake, the doctor is gonna see you soon. We’ll have him explain.” My dad chimed in.

Screenshot-7854

“How’re you feeling?” Allium asked, his voice full of concern.

“Tired, sore, kinda like I’m on fire.” I laughed slightly, but stopped when I felt a horrible pain from my stomach.

“We can have the nurse give you more pain meds.” Ginger softly put her hand over mine.

“How long have I been out?”

“Almost a week, babe. They had to do a few surgeries, but that’s done now.” Ginger explained.

“What? What even happened? I thought I was just knocked out.” I responded in disbelief.

Screenshot-7855

“You fucking idiot, you blew up my supply closet! Why would you do that?” Stone practically exploded with anger.

“W-what? No I didn’t. Stone, I blew up the time machine. Remember? You built it so we could try and save Skye.” I didn’t care that we were surrounded by everyone, I needed to explain myself.

“What are you talking about? I never built a time machine, Lake. That’s not possible.” Why was he lying? Why was he acting like it never happened?

“Stone, it’s ok, we can trust these people. We can talk about it in front of them.” I assured him.

“Dude, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“B-but I travelled to the future!”

“Lake, the thing you blew up was a supply closet, that’s it. I never built a time machine, you never travelled to the future.” Stone looked baffled, as if he really had no idea what I was talking about. “Do you think his head injury was more serious than we thought?” Stone turned to Thyme and expressed his concerns.

Screenshot-7856

My mind was swimming. I pulled my still numb legs up to my chest, that position always made me feel safer.

know I went to the future. It was all real, it wasn’t just a head injury. Stone had to be lying, he just had to be. It couldn’t all be a figment of my imagination, right? I’ve never been that imaginative, I couldn’t create an entire world of people!

But,

It wasn’t real.

I remembered now.

The time machine was a supply closet. Whenever I got upset, I’d sit in there and imagine I was in the future. Somehow, my mind convinced itself it was all real.

“No, no!” I screamed over and over.

“Get the doctor, he’s having some kind of breakdown!” Someone yelled, I wasn’t sure who though.

“It had to be real! I know it was real!” I screamed, as I watched the horrified faces of my family and friends. Ginger was crying, as was Stone.

Then, a nurse rushed in with a syringe and within seconds I was unconscious again.

————-

Screenshot-7860

“Hi Lake, I’m Doctor Ashburn.” A man’s voice was the first thing I heard as I came too. “How’re you feeling?”

“Tired, numb.” I responded curtly. I wasn’t in the mood to talk. My head hurt and I was still processing everything.

“Lake, we need to talk about your injuries. We’ll get to the other stuff later.” He was nice enough, but the way he spoke made me feel small. I didn’t like it. When I didn’t respond, he continued speaking. “You suffered a concussion when you fell backwards, and a flying piece of debris struck you in the stomach. Luckily your father was home and called 911 right away or else you would have bled out.”

“Oh, thats why my stomach hurts so bad.” I tried to joke but no one laughed.

“Lake, when the debris hit you, it almost severed you in half. We were able to save your life, and we were able to patch up your insides, but unfortunately, you’re paralyzed from the waist down.”

My stomach dropped. Part of me knew that was rational, I knew it was true. But the other part, the winning part, refused to believe it.

“No, I can walk just fine.”

Screenshot-7862

“Please Lake, don’t.” Ginger pleaded with me as I moved my body to the side of the bed.

“No, no, no, it’s ok. He’s wrong, I’m fine.” I smiled at her as I went to stand.

Screenshot-7863

Immediately, my useless legs gave out from under me and I fell forward.

“Fuck!” I yelled out as I landed harshly on my stomach.

“Oh my god.” Ginger started to cry again.

“Get me a nurse, we’ll help him into the chair.” Dr. Ashburn told one of my family members and within seconds I was being helped off the floor.

Screenshot-7864Screenshot-7867

“This is bullshit.” I buried my face in my hands. I felt like a child, I needed everyone’s help with everything and now here I was, crying in front of everyone.

“I’m sorry Lake, I know this is a lot to process. But we need you to learn how to use the chair now. Don’t worry, your wife will be here with you the whole time. She’ll learn how to help you the best she can.”

“M-my wife?” I asked, confused. “No, Ginger and I aren’t married. Yet.”

Screenshot-7866

“Oh god, he doesn’t remember.” I heard Ginger sob from behind me. My dad started crying too.

“Remember what?”

“Lake, baby, we got married last month. We did it in secret, the only person there was my best friend, Aloe. You remember him, don’t you babe?” Ginger sounded hysterical. But I could not for the life of me, remember this ‘Aloe.’

“I-I’m sorry hun. I don’t know him.”

“He’s here, I can bring him in. Maybe it’ll help jog your memory. Is that okay, doctor?”

“Please do.” Doctor Ashburn gestured to the door.

*Ginger*

Screenshot-7874

As soon as I left Lake’s hospital room, I dropped the concerned wife act. This was all so amazing, it wasn’t part of my plan but everything was falling perfectly into place.

“Hey Baby, I have the best news.”

Screenshot-7875

Aloe Pinson-Shorter sat in the waiting room patiently. He came as soon as he heard about the explosion, the two of us needed a way to use this to our advantage. Luckily, he came up with just the thing.

Screenshot-7879

“Hey Babe.” He approached me with a huge smile on his face.

“I take it everything went well? All the papers are in order?” I asked excitedly.

“Yup, you and Lake are now officially married. How are things on your end?”

“Even better than expected, he’s absolutely insane. Apparently he thinks the supply closet was a time machine, so he tried to blow it up. Now it’s way more believable that he doesn’t remember the ‘wedding.'” I giggled, it was almost too easy to fool this guy.

Screenshot-7878

“This is perfect. You said you think you’re pregnant with his child, yes?”

“Yup, my period is late. I think it’s happening.” I wanted to bounce off the walls with excitement.

“Oh babe, this is excellent. I managed to talk the FRO board into speeding up their plan. Lake’s family should be back into power within the next month, and you know he’s the heir to the throne. That mean’s you’re the queen.” He grabbed my arm softly, I loved when he used that word.

“And as long as I have his kid, there’s no way I’ll lose my position. Especially if he’s locked up in a mental ward his whole life. That can be arranged. Luckily, we have the whole hospital on our side.” We promised the entire staff a huge grant if they helped us get into the throne. They agreed to do anything we needed.

Screenshot-7881

“Soon, we’ll be in control of the entire Fae kingdom. All thanks to you, my queen.” He pulled me into a passionate kiss.

“I love you, Aloe.”

“I love you too, Ginger. But we should probably get into that room, they’re gonna get suspicious.”

————-

*Lake*

Screenshot-7883

“Lake, honey. This is Aloe, my best friend. Remember him?” Ginger came back in the room a few minutes later.

“Hi Lake, how are you?” The unfamiliar man spoke to me as if we knew each other.

“I-I don’t remember him.” He did look familiar, but that’s because he strongly resembled my mother. Same hair color, same skin color. That couldn’t be a coincidence.

“Are you sure? We are related, remember? We found out that our moms were cousins, Venus Pinson and Jasmine Fae.” He smiled slightly.

“That is my mom’s name, but I don’t recognise the other one.”

Screenshot-7884

“I do.” My dad said from behind me. “I never knew her, but Jazz talked about her a lot. They used to be really close, then Jasmine found out Venus married her ex. She was not happy about that.” My dad sounded really sad, but it was the most I’ve ever heard him say about my mother.

“I-I don’t remember any of this.” I admitted. Maybe that head injury was really bad.

“That’s ok Lake, we’ll work on getting your memory back.” Doctor Ashburn assured me.

Screenshot-7886

“Doctor, I just got in touch with the psychologist.” A nurse walked in and quietly spoke to the doctor.

“And?”

“She says that based on your report, we should immediately send him to a mental health facility to be evaluated. She thinks he may need permanent institutionalization.”

Screenshot-7885

“What? I’m gonna be locked in an asylum for the rest of my life? I’m too young for this! I’m only twenty-three!” I started to panic, the thought of being in a hospital for the next eighty or so years was absolutely terrifying.

“Lake, this isn’t for sure. It’s just a possibility. We need to get you evaluated first.”

The entire room was silent except for the soft sobs of my family and friends. No one knew what to say or how to react.

Screenshot-7890

I was insane and paralyzed. I’d never have a normal life again.

If you have any questions, for me or any of the characters, shoot me an ask here! I’ll gladly answer anything you need, unless it’s a spoiler for the next generation.

There will be a generation five, don’t worry this isn’t the end. But there will not be an heir vote, unfortunately. Sorry about that, but I have a feeling you guys are gonna love what I have planned for the next generation. Thanks for reading 🙂

Lake Fae Chapter 18: My Future, Their Future

A/N: I just wanted to say, I’m sorry I had to jump so far ahead in this chapter. Appaloosa Plains has completely stopped working in my game, so I had to move everyone to a new town. Thanks and enjoy the chapter 🙂

*One year later*

Screenshot-7523

“I’m gonna whoop your ass straight into next year.” Allium growled, clicking his game controller furiously.

“I think you’ve forgotten that you’re playing the master.” I elbowed him roughly in the arm, making him lose focus enough for me to win.

“Dude! You suck, I want a rematch.” Al pouted childishly.

“Can you boys hold off on that for a few minutes? I have to leave for work and I’d like to say goodbye to my boyfriend.” Ginger spoke from behind us.

A lot had changed in the past year. I started dating Ginger, she was a politician and due to her job we moved to Bridgeport. Al and Thistle came with us, neither of them had anything tying them to Appaloosa Plains. We all lived in a small two-bedroom apartment, sometimes it got a little crazy but we liked it a lot.

Not long after we moved out here, my dad and my brother moved here too. Dad grew up here and met my mom here, it was hard for him to be back but he said he wanted us to be together. It was nice to have him so close, and he even bought another bar out here, so I had a job here as well.

Screenshot-7529

I got up from the couch and made my way over to Ginger. We laced our fingers and softly brought our lips together.

“Have a good day at work, Love.” I smiled at her as I pulled back. The last year with her was the happiest I’ve ever been, she made my life complete. We barely fought, we had similar interests and I felt like I could actually be myself around her. Ginger was the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

“Thanks, Babe. Have fun with the guys.” She gave me one last kiss, then left for the day. I sighed like a lovesick teenager, I loved that we were still so crazy for each other even after a year.

Screenshot-7526

“You guys are so gross.” Al joked as I rejoined him on the couch.

“You’re just jealous.” I laughed, and he rolled his eyes.

“Yea right dude, I get more girls than you’ve had in your life.” Al retorted. He wasn’t lying, he was a bouncer at my dad’s bar and he went home with a girl almost every night. How he managed to juggle that and classes at the local college, I’ll never know. But he did somehow and I had to admit I was impressed.

Screenshot-7527

“You guys honestly sound like a bunch of twelve year olds.” Thistle chimed in from the floor. He was doing better now that we were in Bridgeport. He hadn’t moved on from my sister yet, but he had a job and actually got out of the house so he was making good progress.

“Oh shut up.” Al glared at him, making all three of us laugh.

Screenshot-7531

Almost every day was like this. Allium, Thistle and I would play video games until Al had to leave for class. Then Thistle and I would play each other for a little while, then he’d go off to work and I’d stay home, I’d either take a nap before my shift at the bar or practice playing one of my instruments.

I wasn’t in a band anymore, but I still loved music, so I tried to play as often as I could. Ginger loved it, she was always a fan of my music and she said she could watch me play all day. She didn’t play anything, but her enthusiasm for my interest was nice.

Life was good here in Bridgeport, I should’ve been one-hundred percent happy. But I just could stop thinking about one thing.

The future.

I hadn’t time travelled in over a year, and I was itching to do it again. I was constantly debating with myself whether or not I should do it, and I still hadn’t come to a conclusion yet. But as each day past, my need to time travel increased.

Maybe one little visit wouldn’t hurt…

———–

Screenshot-7536

Later that night after my shift at the bar, Ginger still wasn’t home. Some nights she worked really late at city hall, she was working on a campaign and it was taking a lot of time out of her day. I missed her, but I didn’t mind that much, she was doing what she loved. It did get a little boring though, Al was always out with a girl and Thistle was always sleeping. Usually I spent my time on my laptop watching tv shows.

But tonight, I was planning on how I would make my trip to the future. Stone brought the time machine with him to Bridgeport, he kept it at Dad’s house in his garage. I didn’t visit my dad often, so I’d have to make an excuse to give him and Ginger for why I was going over there. At the moment, my best option was to tell them both I was looking for something from my old room, travel to the future, then when I get back I could grab a random item and leave.

Screenshot-7538

“Hey hottie, I’m home.” Ginger silently slipped into our room and startled me. I quickly closed my laptop, I had been writing out excuse ideas on there and I didn’t want her to see.

“Hey Babe.” I smiled as normally as possible, her sudden arrival made me a little nervous, I hoped she wouldn’t ask what I had been doing on my laptop. I had to make sure she wasn’t suspicious, so I did what I normally did when she got home.

Screenshot-7539

I grabbed Ginger’s waist and she jumped in the air. We touched lips quickly and I put her back down. My heart was pounding, not only from my anxiety but also from kissing her. I hated that I had to lie to her about this, but I couldn’t risk the secret of time travel getting out.

“I missed you today. ” She pouted. “I love politics but I hate being away from you. I wish I could bring you to work with me.”

“Well, if city hall needs a bartender or a musician, let me know, I’ll take the job in a second.” I joked, making her giggle.

“I’m exhausted, I need to get in my pjs.” She walked past me and towards our shared dresser.

Screenshot-7543

“What did you do today?” She asked as she dug through one of the drawers.

“Uh, you know, the usual.” I acted as casual as possible, hoping she didn’t hear my heart pounding out of my chest.

“Ah, so pretty boring then?” She teased as she started to change.

“Yea pretty much.” I laughed. Ginger finished changing into her pajamas, then turned to the bed and laid across my chest.

Screenshot-7545

“I wish I wasn’t so tired.” She grinned seductively.

“Ah that’s ok Babe, you need you’re sleep. Besides, we always have tomorrow morning.” I kissed her nose softly.

“How did I get so damn lucky?” She bit her lip with a smile.

“I’m pretty sure I’m the lucky one here.” I gave her a kiss on the lips. “Go to sleep Hun. You’ve had a long day.”

“Goodnight Lake.” She blew me a kiss before crawling under the blankets.

“Goodnight Ginger, love you.”

“Love you too.”

Screenshot-7547

She fell asleep almost immediately. I laid there, staring at the wall. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep for a while, I was too nervous and excited for my trip to the future. My mind was racing with thoughts of jetpack flights, hanging out with Seven, and learning more cool things about the future. It was gonna be awesome.

I just hoped everything went smoothly…

Lake Fae Chapter 17: Bar Shifts Are Boring

Screenshot-7187

It wasn’t long before I was spending my nights in my dad’s bar. Though it was difficult at first, after a few practices mixology came naturally to me. But all that work was a little useless, the bar was practically empty except the few regulars, who usually just wanted a beer.

Screenshot-7188

But tonight was different. Around eleven the doors swung open and in walked the prettiest girl I’ve ever laid eyes on. My jaw fell to the floor like a cartoon character, I probably looked like a fool but I was so dumbfounded by her beauty.

Screenshot-7189

She was so different from Freesia. She was classy, she looked like she had her life together and most of all she didn’t look like a drug addict. Dating again wasn’t on my agenda, but maybe this girl could be good for me.

Screenshot-7192

“Evening, what would you like?” I asked her as she sat down right in front of me.

“A mojito, please” She flashed me a smile. “Hey, you look familiar, do we know each other from somewhere?” She cocked her head slightly and narrowed her eyes.

“I don’t think so, I’d remember a face as pretty as yours.” I flirted. My game had definitely improved over the years, I wasn’t very suave when I had first started dating Freesia. It had improved so much, she giggled sheepishly.

Screenshot-7193

“Hey wait, you’re the keyboardist for Time Association, right?” Realization brightened up her face.

“Was. We broke up.” I finished her drink and placed it in front of her. I had been recognized a few times before, it wasn’t completely unusual for me.

“That’s too bad, I really liked your music. You know, I was at your very first gig. When that red-head kid was your drummer.” She laughed and took a sip of her drink. That night seemed like a million years ago, it was hard to believe she remembered it.

“Wow, that’s awesome.” I chuckled as I wiped down the counter in front of me.

Screenshot-7190

“If you don’t mind my asking, what happened?” She asked.

“Uh, the drummer was banging my girlfriend, also known as our lead singer. Wasn’t pretty.” I smirked.

“Oh my god, that’s awful. I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright, I’m better off without them. They’re all crackheads.” Finding Blackberry and Freesia was a blessing in disguise.

“Well then, to new beginnings.” She held up her glass and I held up a beer, we clinked them together and took a drink. She finished her drink and set the glass down before standing up.

Screenshot-7196

She threw a wad of cash down on the counter and winked at me before strutting over to one of the few video games we had here. She was odd, but not in a bad way. She was odd in the way that it was impossible for me to figure out. It was intriguing.

Screenshot-7200

After about an hour of video games, she quit and headed for the door. She threw the doors open and strutted out, but glanced back at me before leaving completely.

“Goodnight, Lake.” She winked.

“Goodnight,” I smiled at her, and realized I hadn’t even gotten her name. But it was too late to ask, she was already gone.

———–

Screenshot-7259

Days in the bar were even slower than the nights. The place was a ghost town, I was surprised my dad could afford to keep this place open. Instead of spending the days alone, I’d often call Allium in to keep me company. There wasn’t much to do here though, so we usually just ended up being bored together.

The girl hadn’t shown up again, it’d been a while since I’d seen her. I never even found out her name and now it seemed like I should just give up hoping, it was obvious she was never coming back.

“No offence dude, but this place is a shithole.” Al sighed from his place on the bar counter.

“None taken, it’s a crappy place but at least I’m making money.” I shrugged. A crappy job was better than no job, at least in my opinion. I needed the cash, Al and I had found an apartment and we were gonna move in next month.

“Think I could get a job here?”

“You’d have to ask my dad.” I responded while wiping down the counter for the millionth time. It seemed like no matter how much I scrubbed it, this counter would not get clean enough. This day couldn’t possibly get better.

But I was so wrong.

Screenshot-7263

The saloon-style doors swung open and in walked a girl with bright yellow hair and a red dress. It was the girl from before. Instantly my heart skipped a beat, now was my chance to make a move on her.

“Welcome.” I smiled at her, playing it cool.

“Hey Lake, how are you?” She smiled happily before taking a seat at the bar.

Screenshot-7266

“I’m great, but I didn’t catch you’re name last time.”

“Oh, right. My name is Ginger.” She smiled shyly.

“That’s a pretty name.” I gave her a flirty grin. “So Ginger, what can I get you today?”

Screenshot-7268

“Well,” She started, leaning forward nervously. “I actually wanted to see if you wanted to hang out. I know you’re working and all but I just wanted to ask.”

“R-really?” I asked, flustered.

“Yea. Do you want to?”

“Yea I do, but my boss would kill me if I left early.” Saying ‘my dad would kill me’ would be embarrassing, so I said boss instead. It technically wasn’t a lie.

Screenshot-7267

“Hey dude, this is perfect! You go and I’ll take over for you, and then you’re ‘boss’ will see how good I am and he’ll have to hire me.” Allium offered generously, I was also glad he referred to my dad as my boss, I guess he caught on.

“Really dude? You’d do that for me?”

“Of course, now go! Don’t let a girl like that get away.” He winked at me before pushing me away from the bar.

Screenshot-7270

I walked around the counter and offered Ginger my arm. She giggled sheepishly before daintily grabbing my bicep.

“Where to?” I asked as we strolled out the door.

“How about the park? It’s beautiful this time of day.” She offered.

“Sounds like a great idea.” I smiled before holding the door open for her. She smiled back and thanked me, she was so kind and polite. So different from Freesia. So much better than her. I couldn’t wait to get to know her better. Who knows, maybe she could be the one.

Lake Fae Chapter 16: My Future

Screenshot-7154

It was about six in the morning when I prepared to go back home. It was now or never, if I didn’t face my problems head on I’d get caught up in the magic of the future and I’d never leave. I needed to get my act together, chasing after my childhood dreams was silly, I couldn’t be a rockstar or a hero from a sci-fi novel. I had to grow up.

It was gonna be hard. I’d screwed up a lot. I was gonna have to face my brother, I was gonna have to tell him about why I couldn’t save our sister. I was gonna have to face my dad, I was gonna have to tell him I failed at my musical career and I was gonna have to do something else. I hated to disappoint them both, but I needed to grow up.

My friends from the future had inspired me. Even though I had traveled through time, I realized I couldn’t change the past. What was done was done, I made a lot of mistakes and lost the one person I loved the most, but meddling with the past would only make things more complicated for me. I couldn’t focus on the past, I had to focus on my future.

Screenshot-7155

“How’re you feeling, Lake? Are you ready?” Andromeda asked me.

“Yea, it’s now or never.” I responded with a smile. This wasn’t the last time I’d be seeing them, but it was still sad to say goodbye.

“I’m proud of you man, it’s hard to get your life back together.” Orion commented with a smile. I knew it’d be hard, but I was determined.

Screenshot-7157

“Good luck, Lake. We’ll be rooting for you.” Canis nodded at me. I gave him a nod back and smiled.

“Don’t forget to visit, you’ll always have a room here!” Ursa smiled enthusiastically.

“I will, don’t worry. Thank you guys for being so welcoming.”

“Anytime.”

Screenshot-7158

“It’s been fun. We’ll take care of Seven until you get back.” Lyra smiled at me and at the robot standing at the end of the line.

“Thank you, I won’t be gone too long.” I assured her, I wouldn’t want to burden her too much. “Oh, and don’t forget, I left the box of stuff for you guys in my room.”

“Take your time, and thank you.” She winked. I winked back then turned to my robot.

Screenshot-7159

“Don’t worry, Seven, I’ll be back soon.”

“Yes, Master.” She gave me a small wave and I felt a little sad, it’s like I was dropping my pet off at the vet or something. I didn’t wanna leave her.

“I guess I should get going, before I change my mind.” I laughed, making the other chuckle slightly as well.

Screenshot-7161

“Bye Lake!” They all called out as the doors of the machine slid open. I gave them all a big wave before jumping into the purple light of the time machine.

 ———

Screenshot-7162 Screenshot-7164

A few minutes later I was thrown from the darkness and into my brother’s room. He was sitting on the couch, staring anxiously at the machine.

“What the hell is going on, Lake? Where is she?” He bombarded me as soon as I found my footing.

“Not right now.” I waved him off, my head hurt from time travelling and I wanted to avoid this as long as possible.

Screenshot-7165

“Lake, what the hell! Come back! Talk to me!” Stone called after me as I ran out the garage door. I couldn’t do this right now, I wasn’t ready.

I ran all the way to my room and collapsed on my bed. Even though I had just woken up, it felt like I’d been awake for a thousand years. Stress can do that to a person.

———–

Screenshot-7169

The next morning I had managed to avoid Stone before he went to work, but I didn’t think I could keep it up much longer, he had knocked on my door for at least an hour. I had to get out of this house as fast as possible. So I called Allium for a little advice on getting a job that wasn’t dealing drugs. We had talked, neither of us could come up with any ideas, so we were taking a break and hanging out with Thistle. He was doing better, but he was still practically living here. I didn’t mind though, he was a cool guy and I was glad I could at least make up with him.

“So what’re you guys gonna do now?” Thistle asked, referring to the breakup of the band.

“I have no idea.” I responded with a sigh. “That band was my future.”

“That sucks bro.” Thistle gave me a sad smile. “What about you, Al?”

“Dunno, might start taking some classes down at the community college.” Allium responded with a shrug.

“Have you considered that?” Thistle asked me. I knew he was trying to help but I felt a little patronized.

“Yea, I don’t really think that’s my thing.”

Screenshot-7173

He was about to respond, but our conversation was interrupted by my dad coming down the stairs. None of us really knew how to respond, we hadn’t seen him down here in such a long time. He’s been worse since my sister died, he never came out of the attic, not even to go to work.

I decided to be bold, so I said, “Hey Dad, what’s up?”

Screenshot-7174

“Not much, I’ve got a question for you boys though.” My dad stood over by us and I couldn’t read his expression. I wasn’t sure if he was angry with us or not. It was intimidating.

“Yea, sure Dad.” I responded with a gulp. My father was a scary man, he could flip his lid any second and we’d have no warning.

“Well, I’m reopening the bar soon, and I need some new bartenders, mine quit. I was wondering if any of you would be interested.”

Screenshot-7176

I immediately jumped up. This was perfect, I would get a job, I’d be working nights so it’d be easier to avoid Stone, and I’d be working alongside my father. We never had a great relationship, I tried to not let it bother me but it always did. Now was my chance to get close to him.

“I’d love to.” I answered enthusiastically.

“Are you sure, what about the band?” He asked, making my stomach drop.

“Um, it broke up. It’s ok though, it was just a pipe dream.” I admitted.

Screenshot-7178

“Well alright, meet me in the attic later so we can start training.” He gave me the first genuine smile I’d seen from him since mom left, before heading up the stairs. I sat back down on the couch with a huge smile on my face. I couldn’t believe how perfect this was.

Later that day after Al left I met my dad upstairs. I hadn’t been up here since I was younger and snuck up here with my sister. It seemed like a million years ago but the place still looked the same.

“Alright, now pour that one into there.” My dad instructed while pointing to the bottles. Mixing drinks was a lot harder than I thought, it was gonna take some time to learn all of this. But the busier the better, I suppose.

Screenshot-7180

The bottle I was using slipped out of my hands and fell to the floor with a crash. “Whoops.” I smiled cheekily at my dad, hoping he wouldn’t freak out.

“That’s alright, keep going.” He encouraged. It was odd behavior from him, but I didn’t question it. It seemed like he was actually trying to be a father to me. Though it was a little late, it was still nice.

Screenshot-7186

It took me a few hours to get the first drink right, but when I did I couldn’t help but feel extremely proud of myself. I was finally starting to get my life on track. It seemed like my dad was trying too. I just hoped we could stay on this path.

Lake Fae Chapter 11: That’s Impossible

Screenshot-6727

“So do we have a gig this week or no?” I asked Freesia over the blaring music. Allium and Blackberry’s party was pretty awesome, but I just wasn’t feeling it tonight. Something felt off, I couldn’t explain it.

“I don’t think so, I know that we have one next weekend but this week we don’t have any.” Freesia responded.

“Where at? Our usual club or somewhere new?” I asked hopefully, we’d been playing the same club for almost a year now and I wanted a change of scenery.

“Same old place.” She looked as disappointed as I felt. We weren’t doing too hot lately and it scared me.

Screenshot-6730

“What are we gonna do, Babe? We don’t have a backup plan anymore, if this goes south we’re screwed.” I fiddled with a loose string on my jeans. I was extremely nervous, this was my dream and I didn’t want to fail.

“I don’t know, but we’ll figure something out. Maybe Blackberry could hook us up with one of his suppliers.” Blackberry was a drug-dealer, he made good money and it wasn’t a terrible idea.

“Are you sure you wanna get involved in that?  It’s pretty dangerous.” I told her. It was pretty dangerous, there were rival dealers and a lot of cops, it wasn’t easy and I didn’t want her getting hurt.

Screenshot-6731

“I know it’s dangerous, but I think I would get a lot of business. I’m cute and I can talk anyone into anything. I would be an awesome drug-dealer.” She gave me a flirty smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. You worry too much.”

“I do not, I just don’t want my baby getting hurt.” I assured her.

Screenshot-6732

“Then maybe we could be a team. I do the talking and you carry the product, so you can scare the shit out of the buyers so they won’t try anything with me.”

“That’s actually a pretty good idea.” I admitted. We would make a great team and we  could probably make a lot more money that way.

“Awesome, I’ll talk to Blackberry another time, he looks a little busy.” She gestured behind us, where he was making out with some random girl we’ve never seen before.

Screenshot-6734

“So since we’re gonna be partners on this, maybe we should get a place together, y’know, so I’m always protected in case something goes wrong.” She asked hesitantly. It wasn’t a bad idea.

“Yea, I’d love too, but let’s give it a few weeks, just so we can save up enough to get a nice place.”

“That makes sense.” She smiled at me. “I can’t wait.”

“Me either, it’s gonna be awesome waking up to your face every day.”

“Yea, same here.” Freesia smiled at me again, before glancing over at the array of drugs across the coolers in front of us. “Do you want anything, babe?”

Screenshot-6733

“Um,” My eyes grazed over all the drugs, until they landed on a small baggie of coke. “I could do a line.” I motioned towards the baggie.

“Me too.” She smiled at me before starting to prepare the lines for the both of us.

“So how are things at home?” She asked, not looking up from the makeshift table.

“Y’know, the usual. Dad’s drunk, Stone’s in the garage, and Skye’s on my ass constantly. I can’t wait to get out of there.” I told her as she leaned down to do her line.

“Yea, I can’t wait for you to get out of there either. You’re sister is so annoying, constantly nagging you. It’s like she’s trying to be your mother or something.” She sneered.

“I wonder where she gets it from, we never really knew our mother.” I wondered aloud as I went in to take my line.

“Who knows, she’s annoying as hell and soon you won’t have to deal with her.”

“Thank god, now lets stop talking about that.” I wrapped my arm around Freesia and pulled her close to me, before twisting around so that she was underneath me.

Screenshot-6738

“Then what do you wanna talk about?” She gave me a flirty smile.

“How about we stop talking and start kissing?”

“Sounds like a great idea.”

Screenshot-6745

It was still raining by the time I got home around six AM. But it wasn’t as bad as it had been last night, it was raining so hard I had to sleep at the party. I had taken a cab from Allium and Blackberry’s place, as they lived in Riverview, the next town over. It was a pretty long drive but I didn’t really mind.

Screenshot-6747

I didn’t expect anyone to be awake, no one was ever awake around here at six, so I was a little surprised to see them, fully dressed and sitting in the living-room nonetheless.

“What’s going on here, you guys look miserable.” I half-laughed.

Screenshot-6748

But they didn’t laugh with me. They didn’t say anything for a while, and I started to panic. My dad was never in the living-room, and if that wasn’t odd enough it looked like he’d been crying. I couldn’t even see Stone’s face, it was buried in his hands. I couldn’t help but wonder where my sister was.

“Can someone please explain to me what’s going on? Did something happen?” I asked after a few more minutes of silence.

Screenshot-6752

“Yea, something happened.” Stone jumped up, practically yelling at me. I cringed and took a step back, I was a little scared for what he was about to say. “Skye and her friends went to the beach, and when they were out in the water the storm got too bad, they weren’t able to get out. They all drowned.”

His words made my stomach drop.

Screenshot-6754

“N-no, that’s impossible. Skye is great at swimming, we’ve gone swimming so many times.” My voice started to waver, this couldn’t be happening.

“The storm got too rough, even a professional swimmer wouldn’t be able to get out.” Stone explained through his tears.

“No, no this can’t be happening.” I mumbled as my head started to spin. I felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest and I couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t be dead, I just saw her last night. She was fine.

Screenshot-6758

“A-are they sure?” I asked, hopeful that maybe she was still out there, they just hadn’t found her yet.

“T-they’re sure. They recovered the bodies a f-few hours ago.” Stone explained between sobs.

“Oh my god.” I clutched my chest, the whole room was spinning and I felt like I was gonna pass out.

“Do you need to sit down, Lake?” My dad asked, but I could barely hear him. My mind was racing, what could I have done differently? Was this my fault? Maybe if I had gone with her I could’ve stopped this, or at least I would’ve died too and I wouldn’t have to live without her.

Screenshot-6761

I sank to my knees, I couldn’t stand anymore. I was sobbing too hard. I felt awful, maybe if we hadn’t been fighting for the past few years she wouldn’t have made new friends and she wouldn’t have gone.

Another sob ripped through my body as I realized I would never be able to make up with her. She would never know that I do still love her and that I didn’t want us to be fighting forever.

She would never know.

Lake Fae Chapter 10: Unlikeable

A/N Hey guys, I’m back! I’m doing better now, I’m finally back on a normal schedule and I decided it was time to start writing again. My updates won’t be as frequent as they used to be, but I will be posting as often as I can. Also, drug use and swearing, read with caution if that triggers you. Thank you and enjoy the chapter!

*Four Years Later*

Screenshot-6694

A lot has changed since Lake and I’s falling out. After the night in the club, Thistle and I became and item and we’ve been inseparable ever since. He’s been my rock throughout all the troubles I’ve had with my older brother. He also dropped out of the band right after the first gig, he was not happy with Lake after he punched him. They haven’t really talked since.

Another new thing was that my other older brother, Stone had a boyfriend now. I didn’t even know he liked guys until he brought Thyme home. They make a great pair and I’ve never seen my older brother happier.

Both Stone and I were enrolled at the local community college, he was studying some kind of science something or other and I was studying journalism. My dream was to become a famous reporter.

Screenshot-6695

“Are you sure you guys wouldn’t be more comfortable on the couch?” Thistle asked Stone and Thyme, who were currently watching the television from the floor.

“We’re fine, we have more room to stretch out down here. Thanks though.” Thyme smiled graciously at my boyfriend.

Thistle was about to respond when the front door swung open and slammed loudly against the wall.

Screenshot-6698

“Aye bitches, what’s up?” The new Time Association drummer, Blackberry, shouted as the band entered the house. They’d been spending a lot more time here after Stone moved into the garage and Lake got the room all to himself. Even though they had all the band equipment they could ever need in there, I never heard them practicing at all. I had my suspicions about what they did in there, and from the looks of it it looked like they’d been doing it elsewhere too.

Screenshot-6699

“Really, Lake? Coming home high again?” I could tell he was on something by the unfocused look in his eyes.

“Chill out, don’t be such a mom.” He slurred, making his little crew chuckle.

“Honestly Lake, you gotta stop this.”

Screenshot-6701

“What’re you gonna do? I’m nineteen, I can do whatever the hell I want.” He scoffed, getting ready to walk away.

“You have to stop being a loser sometime, Lake.” I blurted out and immediately regretted it.

Screenshot-6704

“I’m not a loser, Skye. My band is finally getting bigger and what are you doing? Going to school to be some dumbass writer? Do you really need a degree to ask people questions then write it down? You’re such a bitch and I’m so tired of your constant nagging. Leave me alone and mind your own damn business.” He was practically yelling by the time he finished.

Screenshot-6706

“I’m just worried about you, Lake.” We might not be best friends like we used to be, but he was still my brother and I cared about him.

“Ha, yea right.” He laughed sarcastically. “You’re just a control freak who likes to control everything and everyone. Leave me alone.” He scowled at me before turning to his band. He stuck out his hand for Freesia and led them all upstairs to his room.

Screenshot-6708

Even though we did this constantly, each time it felt like my heart was being smashed into tiny pieces. Thistle could tell I was starting to get upset so he immediately stood up and started to comfort me. I was thankful at least he was here for me.

*Lake*

Screenshot-6709

“Shit man, this set up is so sick!” Allium claimed excitedly as he and Blackberry played with my new gaming system.

“Thanks man.” I chuckled, it was nice to have a gaming system in my room. Otherwise I’d have to play in the living-room, which was not ideal.

Screenshot-6710

A lot of things had changed since our first gig. Thistle left the band to be a nerd with Skye, which really sucked for a while but we eventually found Blackberry. He was a few years older than us but he was an awesome drummer so we didn’t mind. Another thing was that Allium and Amaryllis broke up. It happened about a year after the first gig, they broke up when she thought we were getting too deep into drugs.

Screenshot-6711

The drugs we were taking now were more hardcore than before but that didn’t mean we were addicts. We could stop any time we wanted, we just didn’t want to.

“Hey Babe, pass me a hit.” I asked Freesia who was sitting next to the stash.

“Of course.” She smiled at me before grabbing a needle.

Screenshot-6714

A few minutes later I was high again and on top of my girlfriend.

“You are so fucking gorgeous.” I whispered against her lips.

“You guys better not start fucking in front of us, I swear to god I will kick your ass.” Blackberry threatened without even looking away from the television screen.

“Screw you.” Freesia stuck her tongue out at him before pressing her lips into mine.

Screenshot-6720

A few days later I sat in the kitchen, half eating cake and half scrolling through my Instasim feed. I was going to a party at Blackberry and Allium’s place, they’d recently become roommates and they were throwing a housewarming party. It was gonna be epic.

Screenshot-6722

“Uh, hey Lake.” A voice broke me away from my phone. I looked up to see my sister standing in the doorway in a bikini.

“What do you want, Skye?” I asked, probably a bit too harsh. But I didn’t care, she was being such a bitch lately.

“Well, I’m going to the beach with a few friends tonight, would you like to come?” She asked hesitantly.

Screenshot-6723

“What makes you think I wanna hang out with you and your lame ass friends?” I stood up and crossed my arms.

“I-I don’t know, I just wanted to offer. I know you like the beach and I thought you might wanna come.” She looked like she was fighting back tears.

“No, not with you. And besides, it looks like its gonna rain tonight. That’s pretty dangerous and I’m not an idiot.”

“I don’t think it’ll be that dangerous, its supposed to be just a light rain.”

“Doesn’t matter, I’m going to an actual party, one with cool people and beer. I’m gonna have fun with my friends while you guys sit in soggy sand and be miserable. Have fun.”

Screenshot-6726

“Fine, whatever, I just wanted to try and make things right with you. You make it so hard for people to like you.” She sighed, before turning to leave.

“Whatever” I plopped back down in my chair and pulled my phone out again, continuing with what I was doing as if nothing happened.
