I woke up fairly early the next morning. Sleeping outside was something new to me, and the sunrise and morning dew was enough to wake me up. I was still tired, but I was rested enough to go about my day.
Rose was up not long after I was and took a seat next to me on the swing set. “Good morning, how’d you sleep?” She asked me quietly.
“Yea, it’s not easy for the first few nights. But you’ll get used to it.” She assured me.
“So you know about my family history? I’m really curious to learn more about them.”
“Oh yeah,” Her face lit up. “You have such an interesting history. I guess I’ll start with where everything went wrong.” She chuckled. “Basically, the Fae empire was going strong for hundreds of years. The last king and queen before the fall of the empire could only have one child, so they did all they could to protect her. She didn’t like that, so eventually hooked up with one of the servants. She fell pregnant, and was urged to abort. But she refused, and ran off with the servant. The empire fell because there was no longer an heir to take over.” She explained.
“Damn, that is interesting.” I commented. “What happened next?”
“The two of them lived happily together for a while, they had another kid, but then the humans discovered the existence of supernatural creatures. The parents were killed, the first born was taken to a government research facility, and we’re unsure what happened to the son.”
“The daughter, Primrose, lived here actually. This used to be an experiment town. She had two kids, a vampire son and a fairy daughter. The son took on the legacy, because the daughter passed away fairly young. His life was full of drama, ghosts and murder. His first girlfriend murdered his second, then he eventually married the second girlfriend’s sister. They had three kids.”
“Wow, he sounds pretty interesting. I really do have an interesting family.”
“Yea, that’s for sure. But here’s where it gets real interesting. Their firstborn was the very first vampire-fairy hybrid. She was your grandmother, her name was Jasmine. As a teenager, Jasmine accidentally used her powers and emotionally tortured a classmate. The classmate committed suicide, and Jasmine was devastated. She took a mission to travel by boat away from Sunset Valley, unsure if she’d survive.
“She ended up in Bridgeport, which was also an experiment town at the time. No one is really sure what happened to her there, but we do know that she got pregnant and was eventually discovered by the police. They kept her in a cage while they talked to the human government. But, she managed to escape. She apparently went to an isolated island with the son of the Bridgeport Mayor. They had two kids together, one of them being your dad.”
“Do you know what happened to my dad?” I asked excitedly. Maybe I could actually find him.
“Unfortunately, no one knows where he is now. But he had a lot of issues when he was younger so most people assume he’s dead or just really messed up.”
“What kind of issues?” I asked.
“Drug issues. He was a musician and he got involved with the wrong crowd. He was doing alright when he met your mom, but there was some kind of explosion and he had a bit of a breakdown. Your mom had just found out she was pregnant and now we’re here.”
“So no one knows where he is?” I asked dejectedly.
“No, but I bet if you tried you could track him down.” She encouraged.
“Sounds kind of impossible at this point. But thank you, I’m really glad I got to learn about my family history.”
“I’m glad I could help.” She smiled at me.
A little later that day, all four of us sat next to the small pond and just talked. It was a nice day, and I was really enjoying their company.
“Do you guys have any long term plans?” I asked. After hearing my family history, I thought maybe I should start planning for the future.
“You mean like when we’re adults?” Pepper questioned.
“Well I don’t really. All I know is that I don’t want to live in a park forever.”
“Do you have any passions?” I asked him.
“I guess I’d really like to work with animals. They’re really cool.” He responded.
“That’s awesome. Animals seem cool, I’ve never really been close to one though.” I admitted. Mother didn’t want me to have any.
“You seem like you’d love animals. We’ll have to take you to a pet store or something eventually.” Jean offered.
“That sounds cool”. I turned to her. “What about you, what would you like to do?”
“I’d really love to be a tattoo artist. There’s just something so cool about a living, breathing canvas.”
“That sounds hard, I’d be scared to mess up.” I chuckled.
“Yea, I can see that. But the thrill of doing it is enough for me.” She told me.
“What about you, Rose?” I asked her.
“Probably a historian. Something about history is just so fascinating.” She beamed. I could tell she really was passionate about it.
“Yea, you’d be really good at that.” I told her, and she smiled even wider.
“Yea definitely.” I told her, and she blushed.
“W-what about you Thorn?” She asked, slightly flustered.
“I want to be a video game developer. I spent a lot of time playing video games with Hawk and I think making them would be the best job in the world.”
“Yea I bet.”
“Well, here’s to getting our shit together.” Jean said enthusiastically, making the rest of us chuckle.
‘Yea, we don’t need parents, or school. We can do this on our own.” Pepper chimed in.
I was really excited to look forward to my future.
But first, I needed to get over my past. The past few days my life did a huge one-eighty, and I barely had time to adjust. One minute I was fine, and the next I felt like I couldn’t breathe. The woman who raised me was dead. And I just ran. I left my best friend to deal with the death of his mother, and I wasn’t there for him. I felt like such an awful person.
“Thorn, are you okay?” Rose asked timidly from my left.
“I don’t know.” I answered honestly.
“Can I sit? Or do you wanna be alone?”
“You can sit.”
“Is this about your nanny?” She asked quietly. I nodded. “Thorn, there was nothing you could’ve done. She would understand why you left. That was not a healthy environment, you’re so much better off without them.”
“But what about Hawk?” I asked.
“He has his dad. He’s probably confused, but he won’t be forever. Someday we can track him down, we should just let things cool down for a bit.” She suggested.
“What if he hates me? Or blames me for what happened?” Aloe was the only one there who really knew what happened that night, and who knows what he told everyone. I didn’t trust him at all.
“I doubt that. You’re his best friend, he loves you. There’s no way he’d blame you.” Rose assured me.
I just really hoped she was right.
